The Effect of a Progestin, an Estrogen and an Estrogen-Antagonist on Androgen Binding Protein Levels in the Intact Male Rat

Male rats were administered either a progestin, an estrogen, or an estrogen antagonist, alone, and in combination with androgen. The effects on spermatogenesis were observed. In addition, serum FSH, LH, and testosterone were measured by the method of double antibody radioimmunoassay. The effect of the drugs on Androgen Binding Protein (ABP) levels in the serum, the testis and the epididymis was the major consideration. Androgen Binding Protein is a product of the Sertoli cell of the testis and has been shown to be important in the transport of sperm and androgen from the testis to the epididymis and in spermatid maturation. This experiment was designed to determine if ABP plays a role in the regulation of the spermatogenic process. While conclusive evidence has not been found which supports this possibility, several experimental findings indicate that it is feasible.
