A Taxonomic Study of the Bottlenose Dolphin (Genus Tursiops) in Southeastern Florida Waters
A taxonomic study of the population of Tursiops located in southeastern Florida waters was made on the basis of skull and body measurements. Material from a total of 64 specimens was examined, the majority collected from beached animals. Body measurements were plotted against total length and analyzed for patterns of development. Skull measurements were plotted against the number of postnatal dentine layers and development was analyzed with emphasis on functional units of the skull. Comparison of the data presented in this report with data collected on Tursiops from other geographic locations will facilitate the taxonomic characterization of Tursiops sopecies.
