The Effect of Soil Moisture on Nitrogenase Activity of Anabaena Cylindrica in Terrestrial Laboratory Microcosms

Terrestrial microcosms containing soil, water and the blue-green alga, Anabaena cylindrica, were incubated for a period of 2 1/2 weeks. Five different soil moisture conditions and appropriate blanks were analyzed for nitrogenase activity and growth using the acetylene assay, and chlorophyll a content techniques. Assay results were highly variable but average readings were greatest in higher moisture samples (greater than 46% field capacity moisture). High efficiency nitrogenase activity appeared to correspond with the logarithmic growth phase of the algal population.
