Abstract
Selective predation by Chaoborus punctipennis on crustacean
zooplankton was investigated in both field and experimental
situations. Crop contents of larvae taken in Gull Lake,
Michigan, were analyzed and selection of copepods over Daphnids
was found. Selection between Cyclopoid and Calnoid copepods
was minimal. Experiments involved several standardized
zooplankton assemblages of representatives of each of these
three major prey types. Predation was measured by comparing
prey losses in experimental bottles to any prey losses in control
bottles. Again, copepods were selected over Daphnids, and little
selection between the two copepod types was evident.
