Abstract
In my research, I found that many German attitudes about Americans can be identified as themes in German literature, written in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Therefore, my paper will concentrate largely on these works, with a discussion of other possible reasons for anti-Americanism in Germany. The sections concerning literature are written in German, primarily because almost all of the sources I cite are only available in the original German language. Writing these sections in German is thus appropriate. The remaining sections are written in my native tongue, English. I hope that with this paper, readers will walk away with a better understanding of why Germans hold certain beliefs about Americans. It is important to realize that much of what Germans say or think about Americans is not a direct insult or attack on American society, but rather are responses to their own problems, a situation which I will explain in greater detail in this paper. Americans should not take such negative comments very seriously; this paper will help understand these sentiments and where they stem from.
