|dc.description.abstract||Portage Northern High School is located in the north west part of the City of Portage.
Portage population is made up mostly of white, white collar and middle class workers
with a small, but growing, minority population. The teaching and administrative staff as
far as was observable was all white except for one black administrator in training. The
minority students mostly encountered during the teaching internship, were of East Asian
origin and of the 85 students that were my responsibility, there were only four black
The students in the classroom ranged from, kids with good family structure and
socioeconomic backgrounds, to students from poor socioeconomic single parent families.
Most of the students were found to be well supported by their families and motivated if
not highly motivated toward school and learning.
Portage Public Schools are out of state formula and receive their monies from property
tax. They also have a some large and medium size industry that add to the tax base.
While teaching in the district there was a bond issue that was voted down on. The money
from the bond was to be used for capital improvements and the effects of the vote could
mean a delay in a much needed computer lab for the mathematics program and
renovations to the science laboratories.
My responsibilities at the school were varied and interesting. The school day started at
7 :00 am with Mr. Kitchen. This hour before school was time set aside to discuss and
plan my two hours of class with his math students. George Kitchen teaches and is the
mathematic department's head at Portage Northern High School and departmental
representative for both of the high schools curriculum in the Portage Public School
