A Selection of Short Stories by Alfred Döblin
In translating the stories, I have tried to be as faithful to the Kinostil as possible, in the punctuation as well as the words. I had to be careful to keep the English as clear, stark, and uncluttered as Doblin's text. The greatest obstacle to achieving this end was my initial shyness about taking liberties of any kind with the text; I found that uncompromising exactitude is not always desirable. There are a few places where I altered the text in order to keep it from becoming unwieldy, but I tried always to preserve the sense of the passage as closely as possible.
