This paper came about because of a genuine interest in the ethical and psychological approaches towards the dying patient. My father, Monroe Davis Dowling, Jr., M.D., has had a major influence in developing my interests in this subject. As an oncologist and specialist in leukemia, he has dealt with many aspects of terminal care, including death. I thank him for wanting to discuss with our family many of the ethical issues that surrounded many of the decisions that he had to make.
