A Sphinx Statuette at Berenike, Egypt: The Evolution of a Type and the Significance of its Continuity into the Roman Period
MetadataShow full item record
Ancient Berenike lies on the Red Sea coast of Egypt, and was the southernmost outpost of the Roman Empire. Since 1994, the University of Delaware and Leiden University have conducted excavations at the site of this town under the direction of Steven Sidebotham and Willemina Wendrich. This project hopes to uncover the social, economic and cultural history of this important port city, as well as other forts and smaller settlements in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. In 1999/2000, I was on-site at the Berenike excavations, first as an assistant to Anne Haeckl, and then as a trench supervisor.
