Abstract
This SIP documents my experiences at the Villa of Maxentius fieldschool in the
summer of 2006. This SIP contains multiple sections that each reflect upon a different aspect of
how this experience drew together all aspects of my distinctive Kalamazoo College
education. As the capstone of my college career, I believe the Villa of Maxentius dig
provided me a tremendous opportunity to learn about many aspects of a cross-cultural
academic and professional life. The first section details my experience with
archaeological research. Chapter 1 begins with a contextual biography of Maxentius to provide insight into the life of a man who I believe to be largely misrepresented in
ancient sources. This chapter also focuses on the Villa of Maxentius complex. It includes
a history of the site, as well as important discoveries and major unanswered questions.
Chapter 2 describes the program in more detail, and emphasizes the cooperation between
team members of the dig. The conclusion of this chapter presents a professional
stratigraphic report and Harris Matrix of the Excavation Unit to which I was assigned.
The third chapter of this SIP focuses on my intercultural experience of living in
another country for an extended period of time and how I coped with cultural challenges
with experiential education in a foreign country. I will stress the relationships forged in
an intercultural situation and finally, and compare the Villa of Maxentius fieldschool
experience with my other foreign study experiences in Bonn, Germany during the spring
of my sophomore year. A substantial portion of this chapter concerns the 2006 FIF A
World Cup, and the perspective it brought me concerning European attitudes toward
sporting events and spectacle.
Through this reflective documentation, I hope to demonstrate that the Villa of
Maxentius dig was an extremely beneficial aspect of my unique Kalamazoo College
education. I feel extremely fortunate that I was able to take part in this wonderful
experience, and hope that future generations of Kalamazoo students will have
opportunities like this available to them.
