Hicks Center

Permanent URI for this collection

This facility, which incorporates the 1940 Welles Dining Hall, was completed in 1970 to serve as the college's student union building. Besides dining facilities, it also contained student organization offices, the mail center, bookstore, game room, and a banquet room as well as offices for Campus Safety and Student Development. After the renovation in 2008, the health center moved into the building. It was named for Weimer K. Hicks, who served as president from 1953 to 1971.

    (Kalamazoo Gazette, 1972)
"The snack bar on the College Union level of the building is decorated in a German Rathskeller motif, one with which Kalamazoo students are familiar through the College's comprehensive foreign study program. Tiffany style lamps and oiled wooden blocks for table tops (for students to carve in) lend authenticity to the College's 'wine cellar'." (Caption from Kalamazoo Gazette article.)
