Abstract
I began my student teaching experience one week after classes began at Portage Central Middle School in Portage, Michigan. My supervising teacher, David Reichard, is a graduate of Western Michigan University who majored in music with a minor in history. Right from the beginning I could see the positive relationship he had with his students. I walked in the classroom on that first day and saw a group of boys and girls gathered around his desk laughing and talking. His classroom, decorated with several "artifacts" that he had picked up on his various travels throughout Western and Eastern Europe, often captured the interest of his students. The most fascinating was a hat from a Russian soldier at the Berlin Wall. David Reichard had been teaching for twenty-three years in the Portage Public Schools.
