Within a Novelette and Painting : A Comparison of La Vida de Lazarillo de Tormes and A Wedding Banquet by Pieter Bruegel the Elder
Abstract
After a discussion of the reluctance of critics to compare works of art across different media and differing critical approaches to the question of whether or not the arts reveal a "zeitgeist" of a particular place and time, the author considers the relationship of La Vida de Lazarillo de Tormes, the anonymous 16th Century Spanish novelette recognized as the first picarasque novel and the 16th Century Flemish painting, The Wedding Banquet by Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
