The International Institute of Metro Detroit is located just on the edge of what is called the "cultural center" of Detroit, consisting of Wayne State University, the Center for Creative Studies, the Detroit Public Library, and several museums. It is a small building that sits in the shadow of the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Film Theatre; it is an easy building to overlook, though the work and programs done there should not be overlooked. The staff and volunteers that make the Institute what it is are dedicated to providing social services to many foreign born individuals in Detroit. The support and advocacy that the Institute provides for the immigrant population of the area is significant, and multi-ethnic appreciation is encouraged by the Institute through their many cultural programs and events. One of the biggest events that the Institute boasts every year is one that strives to make sure that its name is not forgotten: The Original World Market Festival of the World. The World Market is a significant undertaking for the Institute employees who organize it each year and the assistance that I was able to provide in my public relations work was valuable for both the Festival and for me. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to the Institute and to be a part of the work that it does throughout the year. Through my public relations experience, I also got a better idea of the potential I have as a writer and in working with the public. Ultimately I became a spokesperson for the Institute, and my positive experience has been something I have shared with people all over the city who had no prior knowledge of the Institute's existence.en_US
