While academic instruction is key to professional progress, book knowledge can only take a person so far. Much more is needed than equations, problem solving, and research. In order to fully obtain the qualifications needed in any given field, some form of experience is usually necessary. In my field of broadcast journalism, experience is mandatory. Without at least a one year of background in journalism, a news director will not even look at a resume tape. It is also impossible to secure a reporter or anchoring position in one of the top fifteen markets (e.g., New York, Chicago, Detroit) without at least three to five years of experience in a small, local market. In other words, if I wish to one day fulfill my dream of becoming an anchor in any market, I must have some form of experience. To obtain this necessary experience, I secured an internship at WWMT News 3 in Kalamazoo. This medium-sized station, the number thirty-seven market in the country, gave me an opportunity to explore the daily routine of writing, reporting, and televising the news. I had the opportunity not only to observe how reporters come up with, investigate, and tell their stories, but also participate in writing and researching myself. Although this three and a half month internship was helpful and very informative, I felt that I needed more to enhance my knowledge and experience of broadcast journalism. I also wanted to work in either one of the top ten markets or for one of the networks (i.e. NBC, ABC, CNN) since this is where I will hopefully end up at the peak of my career. And so this is where my search began.en_US
