Abstract
Byron Center is a small rural town (population 1200) south of Grand Rapids. Most of the residents are agricultural workers, industrial workers (Herman Miller and Steelcase are major employers), or own small businesses in town. Byron Center is a growing community; several industrial parks and residential developments are currently under construction. The population is almost entirely white but is quite varied economically. There is a strong conservative Christian element in the town. The Byron Center Public Schools serve Byron Center and several surrounding townships through two elementary schools (K-S), one middle school (6-8), and one high school (9-12). The high school has just under 500 students and a teaching staff of 30. Because of Byron Center's rapid growth, the high school building is severely overcrowded, even with the addition of four portable classrooms.
