Built for the Limelight

Built for the Limelight takes you on an incredible journey focused on the experiences of a first-generation college student here in America, and is heavily influenced by my own true story. The project is my personal reflection using a unique blend of creative non-fiction and creative writing, in hopes to ultimately serve a much greater purpose than just simply being a bunch of emotional writings, or seemingly an autobiography. The main objective for this project is for it to be a productive piece of media, inspirational to all my peers, along with all African-Americans, and finally to all the urban youth in America who I consider are being raised underprivileged. I target this crowd in particular seeing as they are the ones that I myself most closely associate with, and I thus understand that people in these specified groups are at a disadvantage when they miss out on life experiences, tainted by ignorance, causing these people to miss out on many wonderful things and information. This ignorance is what I want to adjust, so through stories, poems, songs, sonnets, odes, ballads, and much more, I intend to make others more conscious of the world and our many cultures here in the United States ranging from those like the "Kalamazoo Bubble," to the neglected neighborhoods like Washington Heights. So while I do tell a vivid tale, I want to also shed light on the many underlying issues including: racial tensions, the effects of socioeconomic status, and social justice. Here in this work you will indulge upon a smooth blend of a deep, philosophical understanding of society, counteracted with simplistic poetry schemes, including rhyming, and storytelling raps. In the process of creating B.F.T.L. I considered the best of both worlds in terms of reading poetry and listening to music, and some pieces certainly will stray only one way or the other. Still, in reading this project in its entirety, I would hope that any one reader can at least say they can relate to an idea or experience, and furthermore learn something new.
