Scenes from James Joyce's " A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man"

Abstract

The sixty photographs that comprise this effort are to be a pictorial record tracing the meticulously described surroundings of Stephen Dedalus in James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Hopefully, the result will provide a graphic accompaniment to the story, and in a more general way, render the atmosphere of Dublin, the city which Stephen, Bloom, and Earwicker inhabit. To take the pictures, I arranged to spend the two and one-half months prior to Christmas 1971 in Ireland. While in Dublin, I divided my days into morning and afternoon walks, when the light was best for photography, and research on James Joyce done mostly at the National Library. All the pictures were made with the 50mm f/I.4, and the I35mm f/2.8 Nikor lens on the Nikkormat body. High Speed Ectachrome film was used for the color slides, while Plus-X, Tri-X, and Panatomic-X film were used for the Black and White pictures.
