    Abstract
The study, which I am about to offer is a departure from the seminal article of Levine's. This introduction will be an attempt to isolate some of the specific themes which arise from George Eliot's unique artistic vision. Then, choosing one of the most prominent themes of her I determinism - the function of past - Chapter one and two will look at the novels themselves in relationship to this theme and the overall context of determinism.
