Abstract
Much attention has been focused recently, on the
so-called "dying" lakes. Those sometimes-polluted bodies
of water with excessive amounts of vegetation and receding
shorelines. Lake Erie is the largest and most recent
cause for concern, but there are many smaller lakes in
the same circumstances. Home owners have built cottages
on lakes only to find that the water is soon so thick
with vegetation that swimming, boating, fishing, and
other recreational activities are made impossible. All
too often this leads to the search of a simple remedy such
as massive doses of an aquatic weed killer and to the
detriment of the surrounding water supplies in general
and the ecology of the treated lake in particular.
Beauchamp's Lake is a eutrophic lake, a dying lake
in the latter stages of death. This study was done with
special reference toward the progress of age and the
effect that it is having on the lake.
