Plasmodial Fusion and Synchronous Mitosis in Physarum Polycephalum

It has been suggested that the high degree of mitotic synchrony, in excess of 95%, in Physarum is attributable to diffusible cytoplasmic materials which somehow control mitosis. Little is known, however, about the nature of such materials. It was our desire to determine when cytoplasmic materials controlling mitosis are at a maximum in the mitotic cycle, and when the organism is most sensitive to these materials. This was pursued by fusing two equal size pieces of plasmodia from different times in the mitotic cycle, and subsequently determining the effect of fusion on the timing of mitosis.
