The Green Snake, Opossum and Rat as Animal Models of the Hyperlipoproteinemic State of Man

No major research efforts have been directed toward the development of animal models which parallel the hyperlipoproteinemic states of man. The development of such an animal model was recommended by the Task Force on Arteriosclerosis, of the National Heart and Lung Institute of the National Institute of Health. Alexander and Day (1973) have shown that both the snake and opossum are good candidates for the model based on the electrophoretic mobilities of their lipoproteins. The present study characterizes tile lipoproteins of these animals in greater detail and examines two other models, one using a chemical compound (U-21,74) to induce a hyperlipoproteinem ic state in white rats, the other using carbohydrate,_ to induce hyperlipoproteinemia in the BHE strain. of rats. Both the snake and the opossum were found to have serum lipoproteins whose compositions are quite similar to human lipoproteins.
