Abstract
A renal age study from four through eight months of age was performed on a new hybrid of mice, the AYKK mice, to see whether or not they displayed any signs of diabetes. Kidneys from another new hybrid, the AYTKK, were also examined at one, two, six and fifteen months of age. Kidneys of these mice were fixed, sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin, allochrome, and sodium sulfate Alcian Blue. Examination of the kidneys revealed no diabetic nodular glomerulosclerosis, but all displayed severe amyloidosis and hyalinization by eight months of age. Urine and blood analysis of AYKK mice were also performed. No hyperglycemia, glucosuria or ketonuria was found. They did display hyperinsulinemia however, as well as proteinuria. Possible causes of amyloidosis and proteinuria are discussed as well as their relationships to one another.
