Abstract
The site chosen for this study was South Manitou Island, the southernmost island of the fourteen island archipelago in northern Lake Michigan. South Manitou and its closest neighbor, North Manitou Island, which lies four miles to the northwest are isolated by approximately twenty miles from the next island in the chain, South Fox Island. South Manitou Island is located close to the northwest shore of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, with the nearest point of mainland being Sleeping Bear Point, approximately 6.5 miles to the southeast. The island has nearly thirteen miles of shoreline and covers 7.9 square miles. Politically it is a part of Glen Arbor Township, Leelanau County, Michigan. At present the National Park Service is acquiring much of the island for inclusion in the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore and consequently much of the island will be preserved in its natural state. Public transportation to the island is a thirty-six mile round trip originating from Leland, Michigan.
