Abstract
A cuticular structure was found in the larva of Manduca sexta (Johannson) and studies were carried out to determine whether it gives rise to the internal ocellus of the imago. A study using light and scanning- electron microscopy was made of the structure, termed the "larval ocellus", and ablation techniques (cautery and surgery) were used on M. sexta larvae and tested for effects on the imaginal ocelli. A similar study using only cautery was made for comparative purposes on Trichop1usia ni (Hubner.)
