Abstract
The period of this study, 1906 through 1912, portrays
in a microcosm the events which were to occur in Negro history
during the New Deal years. These six years show the
continual problem of Negro leadership; the struggle between
those who would progress slowly and gradually, caring only
for the future, and those who would strike out immediately
for their inalienable rights. The story of this group of
men, the radicals, the militants, the men ahead of their
time, was one of predictable failure, yet without these men
the Negro would still be a slave.
