Abstract
The editorial work on this manuscript has consisted of
extensive documentation but little in the way of structural or
spelling change. The original spelling, with the exception of
ships' names, is present in every case; if clarification was
necessary the corrected spelling follows in brackets. All
additions in punctuation have been bracketed and where possible
all references to places or people have been explained. The
only correction not bracketed, again with the exception of the
ships' names, is the capitalization of the initial word in a
sentence; the author was not consistent in this respect. He did,
however, capitalize elsewhere, following his own pattern as to
what he felt needed emphasis. All deletions, except of the weather, have been marked with omission dots; these abridgments
were limited to repetitive commentary. Where a day has been
omitted, a brief summary of its contents has been supplied. The
only exception to this comes in the last three entries in the
diary. They are from the following year and bear no relationship
to the content of the three months on the Peninsula.
