My intent in writing this paper was to discuss England's reactions to America during the nineteenth century. I became especially interested in the Civil War years when I ran across some old family letters written by a Federal soldier to his brother. Limiting my research to this particular era, I was able to find the diaries or travel narratives of five Englishmen who had traveled in America between 1859 and 1863. With a discussion of the individual background of each traveler, and a comparison of their comments on various aspects of American life, I hope to illustrate the feelings existing between these two nations and also to recapture a portion of the flavor of the era.
