Throughout the book, I have tried to give a fairly literal translation, while at the same time maintaining as much of Erich Kastner's style and humor as possible. In order to preserve the "German flavor," I made only slight changes, for ease in pronunciation, in a few of the more important proper nouns, and none at all in the rest.
