Abstract
It is widely assumed that the motor vehicle industry
dominates the economy ot Detroit and, indeed, of Michigan
as a whole. However, as far as I was able to determine, no
one until now had investigated the extent of this alleged
domination or even proven that it existed. I set out to determine: (1) whether or not this domination existed;
(2) its power and extent, if any, and some of its consequences
in recent years; and (3) whether the domination, if
it indeed exists, will continue in the future and some of
its possible consequences.
This paper limits itself to the Detroit Metropolitan Area and hence does not prove whether or not the economy of
Michigan as a whole is dominated by the motor vehicle
industry. However, two facts suggest that it is if the DMA is. First, almost half of Michigan's population is concentrated
in the three counties, Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb,
that make up the DMA. Second, in 1963, almost 40% of
Michigan's motor vehicle employment was outside the DMA.
