Abstract
This paper is an exploration or the value of the formal
elements of modem abstract painting. It is centered around
the work of Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian who were
among the first and most influential artists to paint abstractly.
More importantly, they represent two opposing, if
not polar, approaches to abstraction. A comparison of their
divergent approaches will be made to show bow the intent of
the artist determines the plastic means he uses in his pictures.
Psychological studies in the visual perception of the plastic
elements will be used to show how the elements in themselves
are suitable to convey the artist's intent. The focus of attention is the reciprocal relationship between the formal elements and the artist's intents.
