This study is limited to the influence of Quechua vocabulary on the Spanish spoken in Quito, the capital and 'cultural center' of the Sierra. Moreover, the scope of this study is further limited in that the vocabulary used in the study is drawn exclusively from Quechua words used by the Ecuadorian author, Jorge Icaza, in his novel, Huasipungo, (1934). It is the purpose of this thesis, first to determine to what extent the Quechua vocabulary used in Huasipungo has been assimilated into Ecuadorian Spanish as spoken in Quito, the capital of the country; and secondly to determine class-related differences in use and meaning of these Quechua words.
