The present paper is an attempt to bring together systems of thought. The result will not be a single, coherent theory which will postulate specific hypotheses for proof or disproof - although in places questions for research will be suggested. What will emerge is a series of related arguments for and against many of the trends of contemporary sociology. Insofar as the two thinkers involved have not, it seems, been examined together in the manner described above, the final results will, hopefully, prove to be productive. In that potential productivity lies the justification of the undertaking.
