Abstract
Long Venice shows the Grand Canal from Doge's Palace at the left of the church of Santa Maria della Salute at the right. The view is a mirror image of the actual scene; Whistler drew directly on the plate without reversing the image. In this fifth state, the plate was wiped to leave a slight film of ink, an effect which is noticeable in the foreground. The plate is known to have been canceled (Naylor).
