Abstract
Although today it is true that Americans are living longer, it is equally true that they are dying longer and this has created a whole new field of ethics and etiquette which has only recently begun to receive the consideration which it deserves. This paper is an attempt to illuminate one small aspect of this emerging field: the problems surrounding the dying and death of a mentally sound adult and the problems and interactions this creates for his physician and family. This focus eliminates many interesting and equally pressing ethical problems; the death (or perhaps the life) of the senile old being just one obvious example. However, the management of the dying of the mentally sound can point out guidelines for other related aspects of this growing problem.
