Abstract
The richness of the diction and imagery employed by
Edmund Spenser in his Epithalamion tempts one into an immediate
exploration of, for example, the depth and importance
of his mythological allusions. A brief pause, however, to
consider background and structure yields more than minor rewards;
together, they provide and emphasize the essential element
of the poem, 1.e., time. Once one understands the signif1cance
and centrality of time to the poem, one can appreciate
much more fully Spenser's use of mythology to reinforce sense
and tone throughout his marriage poem.
