Growing Up American
MetadataShow full item record
The shape I have tried to give my SIP follows the coming of my great grandmother's family to America, a few small incidents in her life and some very difficult moments in which she had to question her identity and sense of belonging. It ends with her as a teenager working to contribute to the family income in a factory, followed by an encounter in which she not only stands up for herself but also challenges a boy who, in a way, represents the many who have tried to keep her down. Although her journal continued after this stage of her life, I wanted to focus on the struggles she had in her youth that formed who she was and who she would become.
