Living on Borders: Preserving Culture Through Language
MetadataShow full item record
As my SIP evolved I decided that I wanted to focus in the area of English as it is my major. More importantly though, I chose to do an English SIP because it allowed for me to experience Hispanic culture through the eyes of the characters in the novels I read. Gloria Anzaldua, author of Borderlands/ La Frontera, would suggest that as a white person, I might one day become a minority, but I cannot fully understand what it is like to be a minority Latina in the United States today. These novels allow readers to try and understand the hardships they endure and the things that are valued in different cultures. In addition to this, doing an English SIP that studies another culture shows how human experiences link us all together no matter the culture. Even if one does not speak Spanish, one can still read and relate to the experiences of the characters in these novels.
