Finding Identity Through Poetry

Combining my English major with past my service-learning experiences I formulated a SIP working at Vine St. Alternative High School. Working with a group of young women grades 9 & 10, I was able to create a poetry workshop. We met bi-weekly on Tuesday and Thursday mornings during their third hour classes. I was able to pull the young women out of their scheduled classes in order to form a diverse group. To fully illustrate my experiences within the workshop, I have quoted authors Baraka, Angelou, and Clifton, throughout my paper. I have taken their work directly from http://www.poets.org. As well I have used poetry by both Reg E. Gaines, and Carol Diehl in my paper. Their work can be found In Aloud: Voices from the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, by Miguel Algarin and Bob Holman.
