Writing has always been an integral part of my life. However, as I look around me, it seems as it the voice of the poet is dying. I can have countless conversations about music and songs but to discuss a poem I have to be in a classroom situation. This observation has led me to pursue this particular project. I would like the opportunity to discuss poetry in a somewhat social environment and receive some answers to the questions I have. For instance, is it possible for people to appreciate poetry as they do music? The best way to test this seems to be giving unidentified poems and song lyrics to a group of people in order to distinguish which they like better. If poetry does seem to be as satisfying as song lyrics in this environment, what other factors could contribute the popularity of music and the waning interest in poetry? What is it about poetry that discourages people from engaging in this genre of creative expression? Is the pop musician a valid artist contributing to the aesthetic sense of our culture?
