Breakthrough: A Play Reconciling Brokenness
MetadataShow full item record
This play came out of an attempt to try and reconcile my contrasting identities as an African-American woman and the duality that the ethnic title can impose on my identity. I neither feel an affiliation with Africa or the Americas; neither of these places feel like home and I cannot fully identify as a member or a native of either of these continents. This play is my attempt to move from broken down identity to a cohesive whole. Breakthrough is a reconciliation of not being either African or America when it comes to full inclusion in either set of cultures. This issue plays out amongst a family of black and brown skinned people with the exception of Cane, who is white-skinned. This is the concept that leads into what is currently Breakthrough.
