This story, I will warn you right now, is not a particularly happy one. In fact, most of my stories as of late have lacked the sarcasm and humor that usually festoons my writing. Many recent pieces have become a series of commentary on the U.S. Military, from differing points of view. One story was inspired by my dad, who was stationed in New Mexico during the Vietnam War. One told the point of view of those left behind when soldiers were sent into foreign battles. This story has a much more recent and, to me, heartbreaking premise. It has its roots in the real-life experiences of a good friend who shares an apartment with my fiance and works with him at Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois.en_US
