Modernity, Colonialism, and Women in Islam
Abstract
In my research I will examine the political and economic facilities of the Middle East
and the social opportunities and protective security of women in Muslim countries. I will
address what economic facilities scholars argue may inhibit the Middle East from
modernizing, such as the communal culture and certain institutions in Islam such as the
waqf and zafat. I will then address the political and social opportunities scholars believe
women in Muslim countries are offered—if women are able to be politicians/have a strong
leadership role in their communities and the availability of education to women.
