A Hole in the World in the Shape of a Man: A Novel
Abstract
A Hole in the World in the Shape of a Man is a novel in progress. The story was
conceived first as a short story, and then as a novella that was to fulfill coursework
obligations for Dr. Mozina's Advanced Fiction Workshop in the spring quarter of 2002.
However, by the end of that quarter it had become obvious that this story was much
bigger than what could be narrated in the physical space of the novella form. Moreover,
at that time, I was trying to think of what might be an exciting and challenging Senior
Individualized Project. Perfect! I thought. I'll just turn this thing into my SIP! I had no
idea that the story would once again prove larger than the constraints I contrived to place
upon it. Now, nearly a year after Jonah and Hattie's little story was conceived, it has once
again outgrown my conception of it, and I am more excited than ever to actualize its
fictional potential- to make a bona fide, full-length novel out of it, that is.
