Abstract
Interested since childhood in the history of Port Huron and its surrounding area, I had intended, at the onset of activity to uncover a period of flourishing literary activity in this Great Lakes city. Although I did not discover many well-known (or even published) resident authors, I did happen upon a dedicated group of women who felt that the history of their organization would provide rich and worthy material for a senior project. With the aid and encouragement of Mrs. Mary Burnell and Mrs. Mary Richards, I began to understand the depth of my researxch and the forces which have been driving the women of the Ladies' Library Association for over 100 years. Thus, my initial idea of writing Port Huron's literary history had turned into a study of the intellectual history and position of women in the mid-nineteenth century.
