Abstract
The ultimate value of the poetry about the Spanish Civil War rests on its ability to transcend the war itself and show its pertinence to the larger aspects of human life. The poetry, whether it deals with political abstractions or personal emotions, must be applicable to life in general. The poems of the British writers achieve their universality in different ways owing to their different interpretations of the war. With some exceptions, British poetry about the Spanish Civil War does move past its starting point found in the War and expresses wider themes. In the end, all the poets are united by their attempt to portray the continual struggle of life as exemplified by the particular struggle of the Spanish Civil War.
