Abstract
The following work is my Senior Individualized Project, the product of four months of creative writing. I entitled this collection The Heart Still Beats because I felt that each story was, on some level, about survival--the ability of the human voice to persist, through difficult times and under difficult circumstances. My reaction to this work, as I flip through it, is mixed. I find myself startled and pleased at images and phrases that still work for me and I find myself chagrined at sections with which I am still unsatisfied. I resist the urge to take stories out and change them; I stop myself from throwing a couple away; and I celebrate the truths I feel I have adequately portrayed.
