The Fortune-Teller or The False Enchantments: A Comedy by Thomas Corneille and Jean Donneau de Visé translated from the French
Abstract
Every attempt has been made in this translation of La Devineresse
to be as literal as possible while remaining
faithful to the text. This only means that as far as translation
is concerned, complete fidelity would only result in
infidelity. Wherever possible, I have attempted to use contemporary
language, although the metaphorical quality of the
French sometimes obviates a literal translation. At these
certain "rough" points, the meaning has been retained to the
greatest possible extent, and the particular speeches or individual
sentences have been paraphrased.
