Abstract
A detailed investigation into the cation and immunoglobulin content
of tears from glaucoma, allergy and normal patients is the subject of this
paper. I first became interested in detecting possible differences in
cation levels of glaucoma and normal tears, during my sophomore Career
and Service Quarter. At this time I observed an elevated sodium content
in the tears of glaucoma patients, although the potassium content remained
normal. I also ran tandem investigations into the sodium and potassium
levels of the blood serum from these same glaucoma and normal patients.
I found the serum sodium and potassium average levels to be identical in
both patient groups, and consequently I eliminated the investigation of
serum contents from this present study. After reviewing an immunoglobulin
study done on tears, serum, and saliva I
decided to include an immunoglobulin investigation it my tear studies.
