Recent research in this area has shown that it is indeed a macromolecule, ribonucleic acid (RNA), which is most likely playing the key role in the information storage process. The purpose or this paper is to describe the recent work that has been and is being done, and to offer some alternate hypotheses on the generally accepted tenet of RNA as the "memory" molecule.
